Faux Stereo
Faux Stereo is here to clean up your sample libraries.
Many sound libraries, stem exports, and game audio assets are delivered as stereo files that contain no real stereo information.
These “false stereo” files waste disk space, clog your CPU and add unnecessary complexity to projects.
Faux Stereo scans large collections of audio files, detects false stereo content, and converts it safely to true mono.
Conversion is fast and is non-destructive, leaving you with a leaner, cleaner, more efficient sample collection.
How Does It Work?
Using some clever math, Faux Stereo scans batches of audio files for “stereo-ness”.
Using some more clever math, files that are flagged as false stereo are then converted to mono. All other data in the file remains the same, including sample rate, bitrate, length, album art, file creation/modified date and filepath.
As such, False Stereo can clean up your sample drive directly, keeping the folder structure intact.
Use Cases
- Post-Production - Converts false stereo sound effects library files to mono for ease of editing and mixing.
- Music Mixing - Converts unwanted false stereo mix stems to mono for better panning control when mixing.
- Music Production - Converts your false stereo drum and sample packs to mono, reducing disk-space.
- Game Audio - Cuts down unnecessary audio asset file sizes and reduces CPU strain on your game.
- Stem Delivery - Flags false stereo files before mix stem delivery (EG: False Stereo Vocal Stem).
- Session Overhead - By converting false stereo files to mono you can reduce Plug-in CPU usage.

FAUX STEREO SOLVES PROBLEMS
Disk Space
The audio sounds the same, but they take up exactly twice as much space on your hard drive as the equivalent mono file. This can mean hundreds of gigabytes of wasted space.
Plugins
Audio plugins working on a false stereo file can take up twice as much CPU as a mono file does. This can mean maxing out your session without needing to.
Panning
Seeing a stereo file in your DAW changes the way you approach the file, we pan things differently if we know they’re mono, we don’t when we think they’re already stereo.
Game Audio
In game engines, false stereo audio wastes CPU, memory, and disk bandwidth with no audible benefit. Converting these files to mono reduces resource usage and helps optimise performance.
